Help me give my students graphic novels! Graphic novels are popular with growing elementary readers and help our students learn different reading skills which are similar to how we access a lot of our news and information online.

My Students
As the Media Specialist, I have the great fortune of working with all 500 of the energetic and eager-to-learn children at our PreK-5th grade Title I school!
We are located in East Greensboro.
79% of our students come from an economically disadvantaged background and 9.5% of our students begin Kindergarten with Kindergarten Readiness skills. Approximately 20% of our student population are English Language Learners. Our students work hard and they love to learn and grow.
Through the school library, we are so excited to offer relevant, current reading materials to engage our students and provide them with the opportunity to develop and strengthen their reading and comprehension skills and to grow into lifelong learners and readers.
My Project
Graphic novels are extremely popular with our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. We have them pulled out into a separate collection so that our students can access them with ease. Right now, that collection is quite small and often is down to a handful of titles on any given day.
Please help us build up a robust and varied graphic novel collection to meet the interest of our growing readers!
When reading graphic novels, students are building up different kinds of reading skills. The skills they develop while reading graphic novels are more aligned with how we access media and information online - our eyes have to adjust to text information in boxes that is intertwined with graphics, images and other embedded media. You need to be able to read and understand the mix of media content all together to fully comprehend the information.
Additionally, graphic novels are high interest for our students. Our readers are excited to come to the Media Center to check out the graphic novels and we want to build on that excitement and positivity around reading!
