My high school culinary students love learning with their hands — from chopping and sautéing to creating menus and working as a team.
Many of them come from low-income households and haven’t had the opportunity to grow their food or cook with fresh ingredients at home. I want to give them that chance in our classroom.
My Project:
This project will enable us to construct a small indoor herb garden within our culinary classroom. With grow lights, planters, soil, and herb starter kits, students will be able to plant, care for, and harvest herbs like basil, parsley, thyme, and cilantro. These herbs will be used in daily cooking labs, providing students with a genuine farm-to-table experience.
Growing herbs will also teach responsibility, sustainability, and flavor enhancement — all key skills for future chefs. Additionally, it will spark curiosity about the origins of our food and how to make meals more nutritious and appealing.
Why It Matters:
This herb garden is more than just plants—it’s a way to engage students in science, culinary arts, and environmental awareness all at once. It empowers them to take pride in what they grow and cook. Your support helps us plant seeds that will grow both in the garden and in their confidence.
This herb garden also serves as a small but powerful step toward food justice. Many of my students face limited access to fresh ingredients outside of school. By growing our herbs, we’re giving them a chance to experience the joy of fresh food, learn about global food cultures, and build confidence in their ability to cook, grow, and nourish themselves and their families.
