A typical "brown-bag" lunch for one of my students consists of the following: a Lunchables, 2 Honey Buns, 1 big bag of chips and a Fruit Punch. My students need to see the benefits and tastiness of eating nutritiously while getting a hands-on experience of the process of growing their own veggies.
My students are in a cross-categorical Special Education classroom and each one of them are amazing and unique.
They come from a very high-poverty neighborhood in an urban area. This neighborhood is fraught with violence and drugs, yet there is another culprit that shortens the average life-span in this neighborhood - poor nutrition. A lot of my students' only meals come from school - breakfast and lunch, and unfortunately the school meals are not full of many nutrients either. My students are eager to learn and willing to try new things, which I believe will be one of the main catalysts for changing their lives and not becoming another statistic.
My students are so excited about eating new foods and they go ga-ga when I bring in vegetable and fruit platters for class parties. They will be so excited to be able to have an up-close and hands on experience with the process of growing nutritional and fun to eat plants. I am requesting resources that will provide my students with this experiment in planting their own garden. We do not have any space outside available to us, so we must create our garden inside. I am requesting all of the necessary materials to plant and cultivate a healthy variety of vegetables which my students can help nurture from a seedling and eventually enjoy eating!
Everyone knows the staggering obesity statistics that our country is facing.
Not only are we a country that is expanding our waist lines, we are expanding our reliance upon large manufacturers and chemically enhanced food to meet our everyday nutrition needs. These companies and foods are letting us down. My students need a chance to learn how to grow and eat healthy, organic vegetables while also learning about sustaining the world we live in and the ground we rely on.
