My students need a comfy place to see art, read, and learn together.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My art students are in kindergarten through grade five. The school is of the highest need. One hundred percent of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. Some are learning English and some are transient. Though the school is high in need, it is also highly caring. Here teachers, support staff and administration work hard to create a positive learning environment. Student work, including that from the art class, is proudly shown in the halls and in community event nights galleries including Art and Literacy Night. District wide, our students' art experiences include participation in city wide events such as Hartford Performs and Hartford Youth Art Renaissance, where three students' art work is selected for display at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The visual arts are a crucial part of our students' learning and development while being a discipline which connects to every other discipline.
While in art, students develop both their art making skills and art vocabulary.
A colorful and comfortable rug to sit upon as we examine learning targets, view exemplar artist work, draw together, and hear art readings would help immensely.
My Project
My students would greatly benefit from a classroom rug! Though my students are surrounded by many vivid colors, a restful spot in warm, earthen colors would provide them a break from the rest of the room. While the warm colors of this rug would help create a peaceful setting, the grid pattern would at the same time provide structure and personal space to each student. I envision using the alphabet border to introduce artists' names as well.
In a stone and linoleum tile classroom, a carpeted surface would also help nurture collaboration.
Having a softer space would help give my students room beyond the confines of their work tables. As students participate in art room routines, whether reading, viewing a smart board image gallery, or examining their learning targets up close at the teacher's easel, my students should be comfortable as possible.
