Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the excitement of your senior year of High School? Wanting to leave your mark in the school? My graduating seniors would like to create a mural as their final art piece.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners and Special Needs students.
They are struggling financially and come from neighborhoods full of crime and gang activity. They are high school students, and they are preparing themselves to enter the world as young adults. Our school is a safe zone, full of caring individuals who treat our student body as family. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, our ability to purchase materials has been cut tremendously. Many of my students would like to pursue higher education or obtain a career in a field relating to the arts. These materials would allow the students to improve their art-making techniques while expanding their portfolios.
My Project
My students need spray paint, acrylic paint and ink to create a site-specific mural. With these resources, my students will create a site-specific mural that will exist in the classroom permanently. Students are collaborating with each other to design a mural that will inspire younger generations to think freely and create. Students will learn how to make a blueprint, design a space and work as a team.
Coming from neighborhoods with minimal opportunity, my students use the resources of the Talent/Art Class as a place to safely express themselves.
Having the professional materials to create art will not only boost my students' confidence but allow them to expand their portfolios and art making abilities. Working with their peers and creating a permanent installation will leave a lasting mark on my students for years to come.
