Ground Zero: Teaching Students About Bravery and Sacrifice
Help me give my students their very own copy of "Ground Zero," a gripping tale of bravery, heroism, and friendship to learn about the events of 9/11 as we approach its 20th anniversary.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be my third year of teaching fifth grade and I am so excited! Fifth graders are at that special age where they are maturing and understanding more about the morals of life. One of my favorite aspects of teaching fifth grade is the deep and meaningful conversations we can have as a classroom community. Whether we are talking about issues that have happened at home, or a main character going through struggles in a novel, these students are able to have compassion and empathy for others.
My vision this year is to promote problem solving, kindness, compassion, bravery, and courage by reading a series of novels that will teach these concepts.
I would love for my students to be able to read "Ground Zero." This book will teach students the value of bravery and courage, especially with all that is going on in the world right now. Reading this book would teach my students about kindness, diversity, appreciation for all, and standing up for what they believe in.
My Project
My students are eager, engaged, and highly motivated! They love to read and discuss their thoughts and ideas with each other, even it if is through distance learning. As their teacher, I provide every opportunity I can for engagement and fun activities. One such activity was an author visit form Alan Gratz. In this author visit, he talked about his upcoming book, "Ground Zero," about two young kids affected by the events of 9/11. Ever since they had a chance to sit down with Mr. Gratz, they were hooked on knowing what happens in this novel. He discussed with my class how each character in the novel is connected, what challenges they face, how their lives were affected by these events, and how each character demonstrates bravery and courage. After our visit was done, my students begged for us to read this story as a class. I couldn't help but think, how can I get 30 copies of this newest novel by Alan Gratz? I promised them I would try my best to get them donated by the lovely donators of DonorsChoose.org!
