The students I work with have never had a music program in their school. We are working together to build a program designed around the culture of the school and the interests of the students.
We started this year with an empty room and have been gradually adding instruments as we go in order to build different ways of learning about music.
Students in all levels, from ECE to 5th grade, find joy and excitement through playing instruments, singing songs, dancing, and exploring music. Many of our students are enamored when they get to do anything as simple as touch the keys of a piano. Music has been proven to improve test scores and strengthen the learning of our students and it is something that has been taken away from many of the students in underfunded schools throughout Denver. With your help we can create a program designed around our students' needs with the variety of instruments they deserve.
As my students learn to work and play music together, they need something to tie the rhythm and everyone in to the same beat. They've been learning body drumming and hand drumming and are ready to move on to the next step.
A drum kit will allow students to connect to the music they listen to at home and in their own lives and build a deeper love of music as they learn.
It will also help instill intrinsic skills like teamwork, listening, and focus. We are start a modern band curriculum in our classroom and a drum kit will tie everything together. Thank you for your help!
