This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While ants can lift items 10 times their body weight my students can't! During the winter line season our students are required to perform on a vinyl floor that covers and protects the middle of the gym floor. This floor weighs over 500lbs, and if we had a cart it would much be easier to move!

My students attend a local public high school in California.

They range from freshman to seniors and are some of the most dedicated students I know. These percussion students not only play in the concert and marching bands during the year, but also have their own competitive winter line group with extra rehearsals and performances. My students attend, on average, 20 hours of rehearsals and performances for band per week, while keeping up on their grades. The majority of my students are enrolled in more than one AP class, and participate in a variety of on campus clubs and activities.

My Project

As I said above, it's near impossible to move our 500lb winter line floor without a cart! While we had a cart last year, it has fallen apart beyond repair. Currently it takes us over 20 people to move the floor to and from rehearsal spaces, and then they have to go back for their equipment. At that rate, set up for rehearsal takes about 25 minutes. If we were to receive a new floor cart, it would only take 2 people to move, leaving the rest of the students to set up equipment. This would add 20 minutes of instructional time into each rehearsal; it is amazing what you can accomplish in 20 minutes! Help me give quality time with awesome instructors back to my students!

The first step to learning music and being able to rehearse is good support materials, and a percussion cart is just that! If we can replace our broken floor cart my students will be able to spend more time concentrating on making beautiful music for our school and putting their best foot forward on the competition floor!
