Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in TK/Kindergarten with Autism. My students are happy, eager to learn, and adventurous students with some Speech Impairments/communication deficits. Teaching students with Autism quite challenging since the students can’t always communicate verbally. My students are able to answer yes/no questions, point to letters/sounds, comprehend simple storylines, and follow 1-step directions. However, this does require an adult to sit with their child throughout the entire school day since they are non-verbal. I'd like to engage my students by using more hands-on activities, visuals and movement into my program to help facilitate mathematical literacy while teaching social-emotional development in the areas of equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

My Project

Items requested will enhance our classroom dramatic play space during instructional time and beyond. When students engage in dramatic play, they are able to create experiences by imagining new possibilities and deepen their understanding of the world. Exploration of different cultures by adding multi-cultural foods into our current Social-Emotional Learning and Social-Justice-Anti-Bias Curriculums will enhance their understanding of identity, diversity, justice, and action domains while teaching mathematics. In turn students will learn about the importance of how money is exchanged for goods and services. Students will also get a sense of how much certain groceries are worth by first estimating how much it is and then confirming the actual price by taking a trip to the market. I will have Grocery Store Ads from local stores available to them as well. Students will connect this grocery store/financial literacy study to other units of study that take place throughout the year. Therefore the Financial Literacy Hands-On Money Kit from Lakeshore will be needed for the lesson.

Children who are reluctant to speak or may be more willing to talk during dramatic play.

Special need students can use the hands-on dramatic play objects/foods in all subject content, such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, History, Art, Visual Performing Arts, Theater, and Physical Education so that they are seeing diversity in all aspects of their education. We can sing, count, draw and act with our dramatic play food baskets. I can model with baskets, food groups during instruction with the students too. Dramatic Play in Financial Literacy Hands-On will definitely provide tremulous support for students with special needs in helping to facilitate grade-level content while incorporating speaking. My students with non-verbal Autism feel a little nervous hands on materials help to facilitate learning to engage children in financial literacy and mathematics.
