This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, students encounter incredible academic growth, but they also have the potential for grand intrapersonal and interpersonal learning. Caring for a garden teaches students responsibility, communication, teamwork, ownership, and leadership. I believe a hydroponic garden will do the same!

Gardening experience is a critical experience in teaching young people the importance of caring for their surroundings, being a responsible citizen, and fostering healthy eating habits.

My students deserve all of these opportunities.

Our classroom is home to 25 students living in industrial, urban America. Trees and greenery are few and far between. Our classroom has houseplants to liven up the space, but the lighting in our space is not sufficient for non-hardy plants.

Providing students with enriching opportunities to care for plants, observe their growth, and maintain them over long periods of time, will result in plentiful growth and learning. This is all attainable in our small space, with the help of a hydroponic garden!
