This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm starting a new STEAM program for 1st–5th graders at our public charter school, and every student will rotate through this space. As part of our hands-on learning, each grade will grow edible plants tied to their cultural or regional focus. These indoor greenhouses will give students consistent humidity and temperature control, which is critical for healthy seedling development, especially in a school setting where light and airflow vary. According to the National Gardening Association, consistent germination conditions can improve seedling survival by over 70%.

This isn't just a planting project, it's real-world science.

Students will collect data, adjust environmental conditions, and track growth using NGSS-aligned practices like observation, modeling, and systems thinking. Research from NASA has also shown that growing plants indoors reduces airborne toxins and improves focus and emotional regulation, something our busy, high-traffic space can really benefit from. With these greenhouses, students won’t just watch something grow, they’ll grow, too.
