Greek Mythology and Percy Jackson

My students need twelve copies of "The Lightning Thief", six copies of "The Sea of Monsters", and "The Titan's Curse".

I teach fifth grade, all subjects, in a school that is forty six percent free and reduced lunch. I have students that are struggling economically, academically and socially.

The book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is coming out as a movie. This is a wonderful book series and I would love to share it as a book before it is shown as a movie. My students have shown an interest in this book series and they would benefit from reading it together as a class. The would help and learn from each other while reading these books.

As a class we would read the first book in this series together. We would treat it like a book club opportunity. As a teacher, it is very satisfying to become involved in a book with my students. I am struggling with the boys in my class; they are just not hooked on reading for enjoyment. I think that reading this series as a class will help encourage them to continue reading. The mythology connection will capture their imagination and the battle between good and evil is a common theme for them to enjoy.

You will make it possible for my students to read a book with their classmates. They can go the movie and compare and contrast the book with the film version. It is always very interesting to see what Hollywood does to a book. Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to evaluate a written adventure and hopefully continue the adventure with the other books in the series.
