I joke about not knowing what I want to be when I grow up. However, every day I step into the classroom I know that I want to be everything I needed from my own teachers. My students draw something out of me that I did not know I was capable of. They trust me to nurture their personalities and interest as well as coach and push them to dig deep. My students come from a high poverty area, but the way they carry themselves it does not show. They are athletes, singers, artist, humanitarians, and above all scholars.
They deserve the best I have to offer them.
In a little under two years, I have been able to create a safe space for learning for my scholars. We highlight self-worth, we focus on the future, and we do so with a smile. I get excited when younger students ask will I be their teacher. I take pride in knowing that they look forward to my class. At all ages and stages in my building, I am so invested in them but I understand I am just a stop on their life-long journey of learning.
I am a firm believer that everyone can do their job correctly with the right training. Experience has been a great teacher, but I know in order to do more as a teacher I need training. My passion for my content area is my driving force. I know that my students deserve quality instruction. As I aspire to teach them to be global learners I am aware of areas of deficit. Taking this course will allow me to fill in the areas of high need in my teaching practice. This course will equip me to implement strategies in the current school year; however, I am excited at what will be achieved further along.
It is important to me that my scholars see me as a learner and not just an educator.
I believe that being able to share with them how I continuously learn to grow is beneficial. They are able to see that at any age or stage in life one can be in the classroom or a learning environment. In addition, it will help me tackle the areas of concern such as assessment creation, differentiation for multiple learning styles, and special needs learners. I want my time in the classroom to be valuable and productive every day. Seeking out a program such as this will increase not only my self-efficacy but allow me to have longevity in this career field. Being trained to do what I love does not seem like work. Showing my students the path to college and career readiness is important. It is the cliche that the children are the future but they are very much so. They are bright and ready to change the world. I want to proudly say that through my own professional development I was able to mold agents of change.
