My Project

The first ten minutes of class every day, my students select a book of their choice to read during our independent reading time. Several of the selected books are student requests. My classroom library is limited and isn't very diverse in genre. I need more books that interest my 9th grade boys especially, and they are typically drawn to more adventurous or athletic novels. Likely a result of the pandemic, these students struggle with engagement and comprehension and writing skills. Great readers produce great writers, and finding novels that they enjoy will help them grow in their comprehension and hopefully encourage them to apply the effective writing skills they see in the novels.

If you are able to donate to this project, then you will be investing in my current and future students' writing and comprehension skills through engaging, relatable novels.

Books are gifts that keep giving; they are timeless, just like the lessons we can pull from them. I want my students to love reading again–to have a hunger to learn more, to be moved by words on a page, to anticipate the process of dissecting a character or figuring out a plot–and that starts with having easy access to novels that interest them.
