My Students

My students love to read, but getting their hands on quality literature these days is a challenge. Our classroom needs thought provoking literature to enhance our language and critical thinking skills.

Our classroom is passionate about learning and they love to have discussions and debates.

I can't get them to go home at the end of the day because they want to stay and share their thoughts and learn more. They come to school every morning to an inner city school in Los Angeles, on public transportation, walking, or fighting traffic and they know they are there for a reason. Our students are very diverse economically, culturally, and linguistically. We are a Title 1 school, where over 90% of our student qualify for free lunch. Our families send their children to our school with the hopes and dreams for a brighter future. They work extra hard in a dual immersion program, where they have to master the standards in both English and Spanish. Although many of my students face real challenges, they have a passion for learning, and with support, they have the potential to achieve greatness.

My Project

By engaging in deep literary analysis and discussion of the book "The Giver," my students will be able to develop a higher level of language and analytical practices. "The Giver" is a complex text that will challenge student on many levels. It is the perfect novel for their age where they are just beginning to question the world around them, as the main character is at just this age and he experiences an ethical dilemma. With 25 copies and 1 audio copy of this title, we will engage in activities that will allow students to participate in classroom discourse. It is through their debates about interpretations, or even ethics, that students will be honing their language skills and increasing their academic vocabulary, not to mention expanding their cognitive horizons. All readers know a good book can be life changing and "The Giver" is a life changing book. As a culminating project, students must develop a thesis based on their interpretation of the book, write an essay, and create a presentation.

"The Giver" will provide the fodder for taking these students to a higher academic level.

By donating to this project, you are providing our classroom with the resources necessary to attain a competitive level of academics through rich intellectual and emotional experiences. It is very likely that these students will never forget reading "The Giver" and it will give them a whole new perspective on society and their role in it, and with encouragement, they will go on to be a more ethical adults.
