Experiencing high school can evoke every emotion: fear or joy, angst or optimism, and sometimes all of these at once! Our classroom is a great place to begin learning about the outside world and how to be the best person possible in it. Each student is unique, from young athletes and artists to students with individual learning plans and young leaders. We're the fourth most diverse high school in the nation, and it shows in my classes!
My students are immersed in a journey that will culminate in college, leadership, citizenship, and life.
I want to prepare them to be the best readers they can possibly be, the kindest friends they wish they had, and heroes that their families and friends can be proud to know. High school can be difficult, but this is our chance to start on the right path. We hope to start the fall fully stocked and ready to take on the world!
My Project
Each year I try to send home a handwritten note to each family, telling them about one good thing their student did. In high school, students are too embarrassed or "cool" to carry these notes home, but everyone (young or old) loves getting a note in the mail. Parents and students love (and need) to be reminded that they are doing a great job.
A mom emailed me to let me know that her son wasn't sure about taking a difficult class, but my note encouraged him to continue on.
What a wonderful difference a stamp and postcard can make. This kind of parent engagement does not usually fall within our department budget, but I would like to continue the tradition!
