My Project
I have been teaching an English elective over the last decade called "Film as Literature". When I started, the class curriculum was entirely theory based. Since then, more and more, I have discovered that these students are desperate to actually make things. Over the last ten years, I have written grants for cameras, for classroom laptops for editing, for microphones and green screens. I have scavenged for old tripods and clamp lights. Slowly, over time, our program has evolved: students now have the tools to make extraordinary films. It is shocking that New York City's premiere arts school does not have a film program - but students with the drive and desire now have the opportunity to complete seven unique "film challenges" throughout their senior year.
Through it all - the original scores written, the short films created, the animations crafted - everything has originated from my trusty laptop.
For the last nine years, this glorious MacBook Pro has been the repository for every original student work. It is where every lesson plan has been conceived and written, where every day, films clips embedded in slideshows have been used to teach a new generation of engaged and excited students. Sadly, no laptop lasts forever. Already glitches have started to manifest, and I worry that at one point, it will be no more. By helping to provide me with a new classroom laptop, you will be providing more than 150 student every year with the opportunity to find their inner auteur.
