Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach American History I and II, 10th and 11th grade students in an inclusion classroom setting. My students are incredibly diverse, many of whom have parents who speak a language other than English at home. We are a suburban school district surrounded on all sides by urban schools. Many of our young people live at or below the poverty level, which allows them to qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They have many challenges they must overcome, but we all strive together to help them graduate from high school and either move onto college, career training, or the military.

Our students come from a variety of different cultures and lifestyles, which makes this the perfect representation of the world outside the walls.

This, along with the tireless efforts of our staff, will equip students with the necessary skills to go out into the world and make a difference. As an educator, our motto is "everyone learns differently", and that is the way we approach instruction. As such, our students learn to adapt to several different styles of learning.

My Project

During our Great Depression unit, we study aspects of the degradation of the financial markets and give the students the opportunity to virtually invest in the stock market. We participate in an online stock market challenge, and I want to encourage our students to participate daily. Teaching financial literacy is important in all of our classes because students should graduate from high school with a wide breadth of knowledge beyond just basic history knowledge.

My co-teacher and I are very excited to bring a real-world experience into our social studies classroom.

We will use these gift cards as prizes for each of our classes, 1st and 2nd place, and additional judges awards for active and creative participation.
