Our Montessori school serves 300 students grades PK-6. We are a public, magnet school and students come from a variety of neighborhoods which provides us with a diverse population. Our students love to learn about the world around them and enjoy exploring their own curiosities. We have multi-age classrooms and teachers focus on following the child to meet each individual’s needs. Students are encouraged to self-select work to practice skills at their own level. The opportunity to choose work and guide their learning leads to an intrinsic motivation and natural joy for discovery.
The Montessori philosophy encourages hands-on, concrete learning as well as allows students the freedom to pursue their own interests and develop a love of learning.
The magnet program was started in 1996 and each classroom was outfitted with all the standard Montessori materials to implement the philosophy with fidelity. Because Montessori materials are used daily, many of the originally purchased supplies are dated and showing signs of wear. Since our school was founded, new materials have been developed that align with state standards and enhance the Montessori curriculum. We have a great need for new, updated materials, but funding to support our magnet focus is extremely limited.
My Project
One of my favorite parts about being a school librarian is getting children excited about great stories. I run several programs at my school to motivate children to read and next year I need help purchasing high quality books to make these programs happen.
These books will help us have two Battle of the Books teams that will compete against other elementary and middle schools in the district.
Next year, 4th, 5th and 6th graders will read books from a selected list and compete against other schools in a trivia style competition. All of these projects will develop a life-long love of reading.
