Great Books Make Great Students

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a high needs school in Metro Atlanta. I have the pleasure of teaching 8th grade Language Arts and though our students have along way to go in many areas, they are anxious for the journey.

My kids need to be surrounded by greatness. They need to find some kind of literature that gets them excited about reading. Their education can't realize its potential until they understand the need for reading. So much of our curriculum is based on reading classic literature and not only comprehending it, but making connections to their own lives. I believe the books I have chosen can help make those connections, because the choices in our school library are sparse and most of our students do not have a local library to call their own.

I have requested a wide variety of books, from a wide variety of authors. I hope this will give them a view at how vast the world is and hopefully light a fire in them to explore it. We read constantly in class, either through book projects or through novel study and I feel that the greater the choice they have, the more likely they are to find something that clicks for them. My dream is a library that interests and empowers each of my students, every year.

By donating to my classroom, you can have a direct impact on the lives of hundreds of students. You will see a class where the book reports are not endured, but embraced. You will see students encouraging their peers to "read faster", so that they can get the book that is checked out. I envision a library that will be utilized in my classroom throughout my career. There is no more valuable resource in a language arts class than great books!
