Mrs. Yax from Detroit MI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students novels that will awaken an intrinsic love for reading.

I am having the best time teaching my 8th grade Project Based Learning class. These lovely scholars enjoy learning and exploring through research and reading. We have been reading some of the oldies, but goodies, but the characters and events do not reflect the lives of our youth today.
My 21st Century, 8th grade, inner-city students don't relate to 19th and 20th Century literature.
We want to explore new, current authors whose novels promise to become the next great books!
We come from an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city. The majority of our students qualify for free lunch and come from various areas inside and outside the city. The district does not provide transportation. Most students are driven to school by their parents. A very few walk with siblings.
The novels of the 19th and 20th Century will forever be great Classic Literature, but when we are battling to motivate young people to read, we need to match their interest level.
We have been reading some of the oldies, but goodies, but the characters and events do not reflect the lives of our youth today.
The books I am requesting for this project were carefully vetted for significance and relevance, especially for African American males, who are often the hardest to engage in reading.
The plots of these two novels could easily have come from today's headlines and tackle issues that are far more realistic today.
My hope is to provide a launching point for my students who are reluctant readers and to open them to the wonderful world of literature!
