Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a wonderful group of racially and ethnically diverse students. Unfortunately, our novels do not reflect that diversity. Though we have made strides to improve in recent years, most of the novels we have available to teach were written by white men who died long ago. We have plenty of "classics." The newer novels that the district has bought are great, but they largely fall in the young adult category. Young adult novels entice young readers into the world of books, but they do not always have the complexity needed to challenge our more advanced readers. We need novels that reflect our student body, and also challenge them to read at a level that will prepare them for college. I have selected three novels that are frequently used in AP programs across the country, and I am asking for class sets of each novel. This will allow us to rotate the novels between classes and impact more students. Thank you for your time and consideration.
This project is for a class set of Like Water for Chocolate.
