My students need material that simultaneously inspires and challenges. With Maus and Handmaid's Tale, they will be able to connect to people who have experienced great tragedy. We will discuss how writing has helped each of these authors process the trauma they have witnessed. Whether this project teaches the students how to deal with their own trauma, or simply to be more empathetic to those whose stories we do not fully know, I know that it will be a massive success. Maus excellently details a son's attempt to understand his father by understanding his father's experience as a Holocaust survivor. Handmaid's Tale uses allegory to talk about the repression that women face in theocracies around the world. Through this project the students will be able to learn about world events, and differing global perspectives.
