Hello! Thank you for visiting! We are the only elementary school serving Cape Canaveral Florida We are a Title I school that is close knit, and community driven. We serve approximately 395 students in Prek-6th grade with a high population of low income students. 70% of our students receive free and/or reduced lunch and many live below the poverty line.
At our school, we strive to create an engaged academic learning community, while also being a safe place for our students to explore, learn, and grow.
The majority of our students live within walking distance to the school and we are the only constant support in their young lives.
Our 6th grade students are very unique. We are one of only 4 counties in Florida that keep 6th graders in elementary school. We want to teach these special students that their role at our school is to be a role model and leader for our school.
Middle school is an interesting time of transition and change for our students. Everything in their lives is changing! One of the biggest things is their social life and interaction with peers. At our school, we model positive interactions as much as possible because our students do not necessarily get this at home. Using this story as a whole class novel study, my students will get to discover unique characters, celebrate differences, practice the growth mindset and learn that EVERYONE has something special to contribute.
These materials will really help our 6th graders because we have only 2 class sets of novels to choose from for 6th graders to read, and they are 22 years old!
Our students need and deserve new titles that can be windows and mirrors to their lives. Mirrors so they can see themselves and windows to see into the lives of others via the characters. It is my goal that by providing our students with a new, more relevant book to study, it will encourage them to read much more, help their relationships with friends, and make the transition into young adulthood a little less awkward!
