This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are bright, thoughtful, wholehearted young people who have real dreams! Our school is located in the South Bronx. The neighborhood struggles with extreme poverty, despair, and being under-served by public services. Students and their families cannot afford books. This includes essential fiction books for reading in and out of school. Of course, libraries are free but many families cannot take advantage of them because of location, time of parent's work, and other complex access issues.

Students in our learning community tremendously value books!

They take excellent care of books and treasure them! The students in our classes are avid readers and writers. However, they do not always have access to great books to read once they have gone through our classroom libraries. Our voracious readers need regular refreshes to keep them on the bright trajectory they are building by reading incessantly. To do that we need great books for them!

My Project

Book clubs are the path! Book clubs are small groups of students who simultaneously read a text and discuss ideas of theme, character, author's craft, setting, and symbolism. The powerful motivation to read together helps students to learn more, go deeper, and take their reading to a higher level. The books we requested for this grant are chosen by students and are extremely popular in our school community! The Haunted Series by Ed & Lorraine Warren chronicles scary real life paranormal activities. Students cannot get enough of these books! Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess is a teen novel and series that deals with a huge issue of family abuse. Students perennially request this series which makes for powerful discussions. We have requested multiple copies of each book so we can run multiple book clubs in the last few months and again when we return in the fall. Students will greatly appreciate this series and have requested it repeatedly.
