This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In an era when testing reigns supreme, the arts have become more and more necessary to allow for balance in our students' lives. My school is located in the South East area of Washington, D.C.
My Title 1 school is lucky to have an increasingly diverse group of students that reflects our changing city.
Despite the many challenges they face in this low income/high poverty area, my students are curious, hilarious, and eager for opportunities that extend their learning past the typical classroom setting. I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
Distractions are everywhere but tables with legs falling off shouldn't be one of them! It is very frustrating to my students when they are working and the table moves because someone else is erasing or painting with force.
A quality studio space is a key component for students to take their art seriously.
With new tables my artists can focus on their art, and not on who is bothering them by moving! Art class can be a refuge for many students as a quiet space for them to express themselves. This can be difficult with seemingly minute distractions that can quickly escalate to arguments. I want my room to be a space where students can relax, focus, and create with much force and movement as they want!
