Gravity Never Takes a Holiday!

Help me give my students a Falling Target and Projectile Launcher which is required to do a demonstration that is traditionally referred to 'Shoot The Monkey'.

My Students

Physics is always a fun class to teach because unlike Chemistry, it is an elective; so students are taking my rigorous class because they want to, not because they have to. As a result, my students are engaged and excited to learn! Their enthusiasm can be infectious.

Our school is about as diverse as you can get.

No ethnic group has more than 20% representation. Our school prides itself on its lack of racial conflict. The prevalent attitude is "We're all in this together!" Their spirit and willingness to learn inspires me to come to work every day. Our parents are overworked, but still very involved. Also, our administration keeps our kids (and teachers) on the ball.

My Project

Students are always skeptical that a projectile will hit a falling target by aiming directly at the target and firing as soon as the target begins to fall. They usually predict that you must aim below the falling target to hit it.

They are shocked when the target gets hit just before it lands!

From this demonstration, students are finally convinced that gravity doesn’t care how fast an object is traveling horizontally. All that matters to gravity is how far up in the air an object started falling.

This demonstration consists of a high-quality projectile launcher, requested in this project, which is electronically connected to a device that drops a target at the exact moment the launcher is fired. This is a practical replacement for the theory that a fired bullet and dropped bullet will land at the same time, as long as they start from the same height at the same time!
