This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are part of a rural community in a high poverty area. Many are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents and 98% of students in my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. There is also a large percentage of special education students in the school population.
My students have minimal exposure to activities that promote engineering and design outside of school.
However, the largest predicted job market when my students leave school will be in STEM fields. My students need a way out of poverty, and a career in engineering could be just that.
My Project
My students will use the GraviTrax materials to design their own track system and experiment with gravity, magnetism, and kinetics. This will build their engineering and architectural design skills by challenging them to create a plan they can put into action.
Students will be encouraged to think critically to combine spatial reasoning and logical planning to achieve their goals with the GraviTrax system.
The system includes a starter kit with a design booklet to help students just starting out, but the expansion kits and accessories add multiple layers of possibilities to what can be accomplished.
My students will use the GraviTrax system to learn to work cooperatively in groups, plan ahead, and problem solve when challenges arise. As they work they will hone engineering and design skills that are critical to prepare them for future careers in today’s world.
