Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching second grade in a Chicago Public School is a very refreshing job. I love looking out into the wonderful faces of my eighteen students each day. They come to school so eager to learn and I want to give them every advantage possible to get the best education this year. We have been studying about the past and how people survived many years ago. Graue Mill in Hinsdale, Illinois has a museum that guides students through many exhibits such as how to grow flax and make it into cloth. They have a mill where corn is ground and packaged for their store. The large water wheel that is still in operation has helped grind corn for a century. There is an Underground Railroad exhibit. The second floor of the building houses a period room with settings of the Civil War era and volunteers dressed in costumes describe life in the past. We will read and research about life in ancient times and share our findings with our fourth grade buddies. Stories will be written and shared. We will role play what it was like to plan a year in advance for a new coat or a pair of pants. My students would benefit from a trip to Graue Mill to see how people lived many years ago when it was not possible to buy a clothes from the nearby clothing store. First you needed to plant the crop, then wait for it to grow. It is difficult for students to believe that there was a time in life when you had to wait a year for a coat to wear. I want this trip for my students so that they will appreciate what they have and learn that people who came before us had to deal with many more hardships to survive.
