My Project

Seeing compassion in action is one of the most uplifting gifts of teaching. When students demonstrate empathy and caring toward others and the world around them, I truly know that a difference has been made.

Books that center around kindness and caring for oneself, others, and the environment are a must for classrooms.

Such books allow children to view the world through the eyes of others. I am very excited to be able to offer these materials to my students. For example, I plan to read the book, "Diary of a Fly," aloud to my classes. Through this story they will learn the importance of building friendships with peers and family members as they navigate how to choose to be compassionate and empathetic towards others. I especially like the part of the story when a disheartened Fly tells her friends Worm and Spider that she could never be a superhero that she wants to be and Worm kindly tells her, "The world needs all kinds of heroes," thus giving Fly hope that she indeed can! Along with stories such as "I am Human: A Book of Empathy," students will gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a globally connected human on this planet.

After learning about the importance of compassion, students will create comic strips that express ways to show how to be an empathetic friend/sibling to others. Students will then share their friendship comic strips with their peers.

Because I am teaching in a Dual Language program, I chose a variety of books that are in English and Spanish. Other materials such as the plush crayons and Arthur the Ardvark Doll will make the books that are already in our class more endearing. My students and I look forward to sharing these materials together!
