My Project
My students receive occupational therapy as part of their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). They engage in sensory, skill-building and muscle-strengthening activities, to enable them to use classroom tools effectively and increase their independence. They greatly appreciate when practice activities take their individual preferences, tastes, and interests into consideration.
To support students in improving their handwriting and pencil grasp, occupational therapists choose pencil grips that address students' unique hand strength and writing needs.
Pencil grips position students' fingers around the pencil in an ideal manner for writing success. When students observe their improvement, they begin to look forward to writing. They also write more comfortably, with more volume, and produce more legible work. It is astounding to see the before-and-after difference a well-fitting pencil grip makes on a student's class work. As progress is seen, it can be helpful to update the child's pencil grip, to accommodate their new skill level and comfort needs. Teachers often consult occupational therapists to determine which pencil grip is best for a student. The pencil grips in this project will be provided to students during sessions. They will also be provided to teachers upon request, for their students who are struggling with writing. Students will receive a specific pencil grip to write with in class, to maximize their abilities.
Based on my 13 years of experience trying out a variety of pencil grips with students, I have chosen the specific models in this project since they have been most comfortable and well-tolerated. The squish and foam grips provide a soothing texture that helps grip the pencil while relaxing the nerves and muscles for increased focus. The training finger grips, triangle grips, and egg grips facilitate improved finger position around the pencil. The short pencils encourage ergonomic use of hand muscles, for improved writing effectiveness.
