Graphing: Not for the Technologically Weak

My students need TI-84 graphing calculators to be successful in their secondary math classes.

My Students

Imagine coming into math class, the starter is on the board and it says to get a calculator. Walking to the back of the room, the calculators are sitting on the back desk, try turning one on and it doesn't display anything. Grab another one and it works but there are scratches all over the screen or the button, the batteries are low again because the age of the calculator just drains the battery. Because the calculator doesn't work well, the lesson doesn't make sense and the math is confusing because the calculator is old technology and doesn't work.

Having up-to-date technology makes a big difference on how students understand and react to their education.

Resource students have one of the biggest challenges in a school setting already because they are behind in the curriculum, and not having up- to date technology where they can make strides to catch up in the curriculum makes them feel not as important as other students in the school who do have those resources. Resource students need the tools and technology to help them become leaders, instead of by-standers, or the future.

My Project

Older schools get a bad reputation sometimes. It doesn't have internet in every room and the doors have their own special way for getting them to open. As educators and administration try to update certain aspects of the school the need of updating technology, such as calculators, gets overlooked.

We have calculators, and yes they work, but as the model for math instruction advances the technology to meet those advances increase, and one cannot be left with a calculator we once used in school to accommodate the needs of our students.

My students need more up to date calculators. The TI-73 version of the graphing calculator does not have certain qualities needed for now-a-day instruction that the TI-84 does. For an example: the TI-84 students would be able to use motion detectors to understand how graphs work in a real setting. The TI-73 was released in 1998/2003. That's like asking a student to write a paper and save it to a floppy disc in order to present to the class, only after they've scanned their papers for viruses.

Classroom technology needs to be updated along with the way the instruction updates with being more hands on and inquisitive rather than just memorization facts.
