This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Inner city students deserve the right and chance to succeed and excel in mathematics. I am a New York City high school math teacher who teaches in a large school where 95% of the students fall below the poverty line. Many of my students enter our school with math skills far below grade level. Within two years they are expected to complete the NYS Math Regents curriculum and pass their state exam; this is a challenge for many of them who enter 9th grade with a 4th grade math level.
Over the years, I have discovered that one way to help struggling students pass the state regent’s exam is by giving them a calculator to aide in computations. Additionally the graphing calculator allows students to have visual representations of abstract concepts right in front of them. Passing the Math Regents is one of the requirements students need to graduate high school and go on to post secondary education and training programs. By introducing students to the graphing calculator as soon as they enter high school, we are not only preparing them for the SATs and ACTS, but for college algebra, statistics and calculus.
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of students and lack of resources at my school, it is difficult to obtain a classroom set of calculators. Over the past years, I have had to share sets with colleagues, and often my students are given basic four function calculators; this is simply not adequate to help them achieve. I am requesting my own set so that I can ensure my students always have the materials they need to succeed in class and school.
Your donation towards this project will help my students gain confidence in their math abilities, help them advance in class, bring their math levels to grade level and help them pass their state exam and high school graduation requirements. There is nothing more thrilling and rewarding to a teacher than to call a student up after the exams are graded and tell them they passed. I have had students scream, shout, curse with joy, cry and express their gratitude profusely. With your help, I can make a lot more of these phone calls in June. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
