I teach eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,643. Sixty percent of the students are Hispanic and thirty-six percent are African-American. Ninety percent of the students are eligible for free lunch. CJHS 145 is a Title 1 school and is on the Corrective Action list. Over 80% of the students perform below grade level in math. The administration has emphasized the importance of raising the performance level of the students. A portion of the eighth grade mathematics exam allows students to use calculators to solve some of the problems. The students are expected to know how to use functions such as exponents, scientific notation, trigonometric properties, etc. Some of my students have never used graphing calculators. It is also imperative that the students familiarize themselves with the graphing capabilities of the calculators. Many high school math courses require the use of graphing calculators. Students who are familiar with them have an advantage in the class and are more likely to be successful in math. Student performance in math will improve as they become more proficient with the calculators.
