My classroom is not your typical math classroom. My students work in teams solving problems everyday. The read and write mathematically. It is a challenging room, made up of diverse students who by the end of the year can solve problems better than they ever thought they could.
My students are very diverse and come from all sorts of backgrounds, we give every student equal access to a quality education.
We have a large special education population, low income population and one of the most diverse campuses in our district.
The ten TI-84 graphing calculators will be used every day in our math classes. With the transition to Common Core mathematics, students have been given larger, real-world problems that require technology at an earlier age. Introducing graphing calculators in the ninth grade means that by eleventh grade, class time does not need to be spent on how to use the technology. During this crucial year, the focus can be on learning mathematics.
Giving low-income students access to new technology is an investment in their future.
These graphing calculators allow students to tackle larger and more complex math problems, which will prepare them for college-level work.
