My Students

My students work in groups, struggling through difficult math investigations together. They learn and practice the skills and art of collaboration as they learn their math, preparing them for a future of working with others to solve problems.

Our students come from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and over 70% qualify for a free or reduced rate lunch.

Our school is a public option school for students in the district who seek a rigorous curriculum that will prepare them well for future study or careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

My Project

Graphing tools are an essential tool for success in Algebra 2 where students are working to make connections between equations, graphs, and tables as they investigate properties of functions, to name just one of the many, many uses for a good graphing calculator in our classroom. In additions, many of our students have struggled in math before and calculators help them check and reinforce their mathematical thinking.

Our students need graphing calculators to do the math work required to succeed in Algebra 2 and the cost is a hardship for most.

For classroom work, they have to be able to test and verify their ideas and have the confidence to explore, make conjectures, and take risks. Our students, in particular, need ready access to this tool because we are preparing students for continuing their education and possible careers in a STEM field and calculator skills are essential to succeed.
