This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of my kids travel from stable areas of the Bronx, some from a little further away, some from shelters right around the corner. My students range in experiences and come from all walks of life. Whatever their origin they have one common issue; their exposure to literature that allows their mind to soar.
Every year I have the challenge of finding texts my students can bury themselves inside.
Regardless of where they return home to rest their head I want them to learn and understand sometimes the best place to be is inside the pages of a book.
My Project
Finding engaging material is difficult at times. Teens and adolescents have millions of other options for what to do with their time opening a book isn't the first thing they decide to do. However I have seen reluctant readers turn around and fight over graphic novels, and converse over the favorite character from a series.
Everyone loves to read, something, at times they just have to be reminded or be exposed to what they truly enjoy reading.
These books have been "borrowed" year after year because kids love them so much. And it helps to have a notebook to put their ideas and reflections down after they finish the books that they finally do not want to part with.
