My Project
I work as a librarian at a high school in central Massachusetts. It is a very culturally diverse but economically challenged neighborhood. Many of my students cannot access public libraries; their school library is their connection to resources outside of their neighborhood.
The students come to the library to look for new books, share their interests with each other and talk about titles they have loved in the past.
Updated copies and new graphic adaptations speak directly to reluctant readers; they can access the materials easily and it will help them pick up a book, which is the first step. I have seen repeatedly how students will grab a graphic novel and then come back a few days later to ask for suggestions about other books they might like. Graphics attract readers!
