Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Since I have become the librarian at my high school, I have been working hard at acquiring relevant books for my non-English speakers. 55% of our students do not speak English. They are new comers who need to acquire all the skills to pass their Regents in order to graduate.
U.S.History graphic novels are excellent tools to acquire social studies skills. They require readers to interact with both text and images to construct meaning, and that is the key to the magic. Words and pictures work together and help students explore new information.
Newcomer English learners have not only language, but new cultural contexts to learn. Graphic U.S. History books are great, accessible tools for reading because they are more comprehensible, more interesting and relevant and will help my students be successful.
