My Students

My school is an urban school in Indianapolis, Indiana and is unique in that we have students from 35 different countries and we have 27 languages spoken by our students and their families. Many of these students are new arrivals to the United States and many are refugees. Others are second-generation immigrants. For many of our students, school is the only consistent part of their lives. Our ESL students comprise approximately 60% of our school population.

The diversity is a wonderful environment to work in and the ESL students are eager to learn to speak, write, read, communicate, and interact in English.

I love how hard my students work and I love how supportive their parents are of their education.

My Project

My students love to borrow books from me to read during free time at school and also to take home to read on evenings and weekends, but I could use more books for my library.

They especially love graphic novels and scary books.

I've seen many of my reluctant readers get fully immersed in these books when normally I can't get them to read.

I'm also requesting a few more books in Spanish for my Newcomers since they love to read too and I'm happy to reinforce their reading in their native language.
