Graphic Novels: What students want, but what we lack!

My students need 40 Graphic Novels - their favorite reading material!

I am the librarian at an inner city school. Our school has 300 students in grades K-6. The older students (4-6) love Graphic Novels. I only have a handful of these types of books, and the minute one book comes back to the library, it is gone within seconds. There have even been fights over these books. My library budget is only $1,000 a year, which is approximately 50 new books a year that I can purchase.

If I had a generous supply of Graphic Novels, I know I can get my students to read. They often ask me where I keep "the good books". These books sell themselves. Even the children who are challenged by reading, are not intimidated by Graphic Novels. They are easier to read and the pictures really help the struggling readers to comprehend. Plus, they are considered "cool".

I have picked out 40 Graphic Novels that I currently do not own. This would be an excellent start to my Graphic Novel library. I plan to display these books in a special part of the library and have them easily accessible to the students. I know once they arrive, the students will run to that part of the library.

If a donor is willing to purchase the Graphic Novels, I would so appreciate it. Since they will be part of the library, they will be able to be continually circulated throughout the student population. It is so wonderful to see a student absorbed in a book, and I know from the few Graphic Novels that I currently own (a total of 6) that they will become the most popular books in the library!
