Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember reading comic books as a child and loving them? The pictures were great and it was an easy read. Luckily, today we have something even better: graphic novels! Help my students become motivated readers by providing them with interesting reading that will keep their attention.

There are 14 students in my fifth grade SEI (sheltered English Immersion) classroom.

All are second language learners, and they are predominately Hispanic from countries like El Salvador. We are in an urban setting and all of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. Interestingly, we have 11 boys and 3 girls in our class this year. They are very energetic! Lastly, half of my students have specific learning disabilities and are on Individual Education Plans.

My Project

My students love graphic novels. I have The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and it is always signed out by someone! The same is true for the Captain Underpants series. But I am quickly running out of graphic novels for students to read. So we need some more! Graphic novels are fun to read. They are usually funny, although they don't have to be. They also contain pictures. Students miss pictures as they grow older, especially when they still rely on picture cues to help them get the meaning of the story. I feel that these stories can help motivate my reluctant readers to access reading and enjoy it.

It is my goal to make life long readers of my students and I am determined to do whatever it takes to get there.

I think that these graphic novels could be the key to open up the gate for them to begin their journey.
