As a second year ELA teacher, it's my goal to provide my students with the necessary materials to enhance their academic abilities and facilitate their comprehension. I teach three ELA classes a day to just under 60 students. I have a diverse group of students from military families that need a welcoming and supportive classroom environment. My students are faced with many challenging circumstances that pertain to military life including family separation, transitions, and other life changing events, which ultimately have an impact on students' academic performance.
My students love learning and flourish when given the opportunity to try new things.
I believe in providing them with a safe place to grow and giving them all the necessary resources to accomplish this!
The best way to inspire young students to love writing is to provide them with dynamic and diverse works. I believe by introducing graphic novels into my classroom, students will be engrossed in the subject matter and be inspired to create their own stories using this underrated medium.
The class set of "Coraline: The Graphic Novel" is exactly what my students need to get their creative minds working.
Not only will these spark a love for the style of writing, it will also give struggling readers an opportunity to read a higher level book in a more accessible format. It also provides students with visuals to support comprehension. I can't wait to have class discussions about character development and how the illustrations contribute to the author's choice of words.
