Graphic Novels to Engage Reluctant Readers in Middle School

My students need 22 high interest books that are at lower reading levels (2nd/3rd grade). These books are appropriate for a middle school student who struggles with reading.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it feels like to go to the library and know that you can't read most of the books? Have you ever had to carry a "baby book" because you HAVE to read within your reading level? My students know that feeling. They deserve books they can read and carry around with pride.

My students are 6th grade middle school students.

Some have specific learning disabilities that hinder their ability to read; others are English language learners. They live in a community that is predominantly Mexican/Mexican American. Their school is trying to encourage independent reading outside of the classroom. The school's computerized reading program identifies each student's reading level range and encourages students to read within that level in order to increase fluency and comprehension. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of high interest books for middle school students who are reading at the 2nd or 3rd grade level. Some of my students are reluctant to read because it is a difficult task for them. They don't think it is fun. And, reading is a source of embarrassment for some. They know that they are struggling. They deserve the opportunity to improve their reading and maintain their dignity.

My Project

I want my students to feel that the books that they are reading are "COOL!" For a middle school student, a book series called, "Library of Doom" has that "COOL" factor! This series, written by Michael Dahl, has features that capture the attention of 6th graders. Similar to the Goosebumps series, Dahl incorporates horror/suspense, scary settings, and mystery into his titles, book covers, and storylines. More importantly for my population, he writes in a way that acknowledges their challenges with vocabulary; yet, respects their developmental stage in life. As a teacher, I appreciate some unique features of this book series. Each book has drawings within the text that give clues regarding the meaning of some of the challenging vocabulary. Each book has a section that connects the fictional story to real life. Each book has a glossary and discussion questions at the end. I want to add this series to my classroom library for students to check out and read independently.

These books will help my students learn to be independent readers, enjoy reading, and improve their grades.

Our school library has a few of these books in their collection. Whenever my struggling students do a title search to find books within their levels, these books have captured their interest. After reading these books, they take a test on the computer to check their comprehension. Their score affects their English Language Arts grade. I have seen the glow of pride when they succeed!!
