Graphic Novels to Engage Readers

Help me give my students new reading material to borrow to keep them engaged in reading at home. I am looping up with my students for the second time and I need advanced books for them.

My Students

My school is an urban school in Indianapolis, Indiana and is unique in that we have students from 33 different countries and we have 27 languages spoken by our students and their families. Many of these students are new arrivals to the United States and many are refugees. Others are second-generation immigrants. For many of our students, school is the only consistent part of their lives. Our ESL students comprise approximately 60% of our school population.

The diversity is a wonderful environment to work in and the ESL students are eager to learn to speak, write, read, communicate, and interact in English.

I love how hard my students work and I love how supportive their parents are of their education.

My Project

This coming school year I will be working with 5th and 6th grade ESL students. This will be my first time working with the 5th grade and I do not have very many books at that reading level for my students to borrow.

Since I am looping up with my ESL students from 4th to 5th I was able to ask them what books they were interested in and promised I would try to get them for them.

Please help me provide them high interest and high engagement books so they will want to read at home for fun.

My students are always so excited when I have new books and I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when I have exactly what they want in the fall.
