Graphic Novels to Encourage a Love of Reading

Help me give my students inspiration to read. These graphic novels of various reading levels are just what many of my students need to feel excitement and motivation around reading.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a public charter school focusing on student agency, choice, and inquiry. In our multi-age classroom of first and second graders, we strive to teach each other throughout the day, pulling from each of our strengths as well as learning from our mistakes. We know that our mistakes make our brains grow stronger, and we work hard to learn from our mistakes.

We are lucky to have a multi-age group as well as a group of students who come from different backgrounds and experiences.

Our classroom community works to be truly open-minded, learning, and appreciating the world and those around us.

My Project

Immersing students in literature is vital to supporting students to learn to read. We are working hard to build our classroom library so that students have various book titles, genres, and levels to choose from.

For many emergent readers, all it takes is finding the right book to set in motion a lifelong love of reading.

Typically, graphic novels are too advanced for many emergent readers, but these TOON books are perfect for early readers to get exposure to graphic literature and instill a true joy of reading.

When students have the power to choose the books they read, they are not only interested in reading, but they are also excited and motivated to read.

This year, many of my students have expressed an interest in graphic novels and are eager to read titles like CatStoghnauts and Dogman. I am so excited to get to introduce some of these titles to other students as well.
