Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My ELL tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or even fourth language. My students are from more than 20 countries and speak more than six different languages.

My students are amazing recent immigrants who work part-time jobs, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.

Every day, my students read their independent reading books and have monthly book club discussions. As students become avid readers, our classroom library needs to expand!

My Project

Graphic novels are one of the best ways to engage adolescent English language learners in independent reading because it provides the visual support to help students comprehend the stories. This collection of 27 graphic novels features almost all BIPOC protagonists from many different cultures, gender and sexual orientations and backgrounds.

This project will give my high school ESL students 27 diverse graphic novels to read at home during our remote learning semester.

During our remote learning classes, I will present and introduce the selection of books and be able to do contactless deliveries of books and other materials to students' homes.
