Graphic Novels That Help Students See Themselves as Readers

Help me give my students some of the top graphic novels for teens listed by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), as well as other fantastic graphic novels that will keep them reading, reading, reading!

My Students

My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.

We have a goal to each read 30+ books this year, and we are well on our way there, but we need your help!

Many students in my ESL and reading support-focused English classes have been absolutely tearing through our class's graphic novels collection. Some of these students were labeled as "at-risk" readers, but you wouldn't know it now if you saw them reading in class. Can you help these students to dive into some new graphic novels and achieve a reading goal like none they've ever had?

My Project

The research is clear: the best way to help students become better readers is to provide a variety of engaging materials at a variety of levels, allow student choice in reading materials, and then (with support) just let the students fly.

We are a class who READS.

In fact, we read every day in our class, and our homework mainly consists of reading at home. Some of my students have already met their goal of 30 books and are still going strong, and it's only March! I'm always on the lookout for the newest and best books for my students, so this project contains some of the top graphic novels for teens listed by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) from their 2018-2020 lists, as well as the fantastic "Nameless City" series. Research indicates that graphic novels are an excellent resource for students at both developing and advanced reading levels. They're an especially good support for my students of English as a Second Language (ESL), who benefit greatly from the visual aid to comprehension they provide for new vocabulary.

The graphics novel section of our class library is one of the most popular sections, but it's also one of the smallest. With your help, we will change that, and we will encourage more and more students to see themselves as readers who keep reading, reading, and reading!
