Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach special education to 5th-8th graders in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, California. My students are creative, resilient, curious, and eager to learn. The majority of them are multilingual and speak Spanish at home. They have persevered through zoom school, high covid rates, economic challenges, and many of them have immigrated from other countries. Some of them struggle with reading, but they all love stories and they love to see themselves in the characters they read about.
I am requesting high-interest, accessible books that will spark curiosity, self-reflection, empathy, and joy to help my students cultivate a love of reading!
As a teacher of students with dyslexia and other reading challenges, it is crucial to offer my students highly engaging books that even struggling or reluctant readers will be excited about. Graphic novels are particularly popular among my students, as they are able to follow the story visually as well as through reading. The books I have chosen are high-interest, super engaging books that will appeal to a wide variety of readers at different reading levels. I picked several series that feature children of color, and people with disabilities, as protagonists so that my students can see themselves reflected in the books they read. have I also chose books that are written for older students who are reading at a lower level.
It is often difficult to find books that will appeal to upper-elementary and middle school students who are still learning to read, but in my experience, these books (graphic novels, fantasy series, and comical early readers) are incredibly popular with all readers, no matter their level. With your help, my students will find books they are excited about and I'll be able to match every student with a book they'll love.
