My Students

Students in our low-income, rural tight-knit community have ever growing ambitions. Still, some struggle with traditional subjects or conventional approaches to education. They gravitate to unique experiences and engaging materials.

My students are curious, brimming with new questions daily, and constantly searching for ways to connect with science.

School may not always come natural, but they are passionate, intelligent, and caring. Often they sell themselves short, but their great potential shows through when we take a new approach with new resources. They quickly find inspiration when faced with a challenge that connects to their lives in the real world.

My Project

To engage my students in reading in science, I hope to provide unique materials including graphic novels and magazine-style books with embedded content. Dated textbooks push students to the internet to research and find answers. They avoid the rich books that can bring science to life.

Graphic novels about science appeal to reluctant readers by embedding content into storytelling.

They use text and images to make inferences and synthesize information, both of which are abstract and challenging skills for struggling and advanced readers. To reach out to my students beyond biology, magazine-style journalism with engaging images makes reading books more appealing than internet searches.
